Location, Location
Scientists
classify deserts in many ways. One way is by the type of precipitation they
get.
On the
map below, a shows
where some HOT deserts are located. In a hot desert, most of the precipitation
falls as rain. Many hot deserts are found around the tropics (The Tropic
of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn). In this area of the world, the
days are hot and the wind keeps clouds away. These deserts have hot days
and cold nights.

on the map below shows the location of some COLD deserts. The precipitation
in a cold desert is mostly snow. These deserts are usually found above
or below the tropics. These deserts don't get the hot daytime temperatures
of the deserts in the tropics.
Some
deserts have climates that depend on mountains or other land formations.
These deserts have weather events , like fog, that are not found in other
deserts. Those deserts are marked with a .
Now that
you know about hot and cold deserts, you are ready to take closer look
at some of the deserts of the world.
