The Sonoran Desert

The Sonoran Desert gets its name from the state of Sonora, Mexico. This North American desert covers parts of both Mexico (Sonora and the Baja Peninsula) and the United States (Arizona and California).

Many people visit the Sonroan Desert every year. The sun shines here more than 300 days a year. People come to enjoy warm, sunny weather and to explore the canyons, dunes, and hiking trails.

The Sonoran Desert is a hot desert. In fact, it is the hottest desert located in North America. Parts of the Sonoran Desert get more than 10 inches (25 cm) of rain each year. Because of this, many unique plants and animals are able to call the Sonoran Desert home.
